1Not what I expectedJul 15, 2008
I looked for a few weeks for a desk and found this - the bookcase that comes with it seemed to be an added bonus.

Be warned - the picture DOES NOT show what parts are metal and what parts are wood. I thought the entire thing would be "metal and wood" as described... it's not "wood", it's particle board and falls apart very easily.

Upon opening the first thing I noticed is that all of the flat surfaces are made of particle board covered with some type of material that almost feels like cheap plastic laminated coating. It chips very easily. The upside to this is that if you want, you can put some wood putty on the ding, gently sand it down and cover it with black permanent marker if needed.

The legs (the silver parts) are made of metal. The shelves are made of the plastic covered particle board and the little brackets are made of plastic. If you do get this desk, be careful about the little predrilled holes - some of them seem to not be centered.

The desk arrived later than stated (we ordered from "unbeatable sales)and when I opened it there's a few ding marks on the front left part of the desk. The slider part for the keyboard was bent a little bit but with some gentle pushing we were able to make it work.

Each piece is labeled and is covered well with plastic wrapping. The screws and small pieces are organized in a small compartmentalized cardboard & plastic holder that is numbered to find easily.

It took my husband and I about 4-5 hours to put the desk and the bookshelf together.

The tools needed were a screwdriver and a hammer. We had to use a small cordless screwdriver - and were careful to not drill the screws in all the way too tight, then we tightened it by hand. If you don't do this, it will "strip" out the particle board and leave a shredded hole with nothing for the screw to grab onto. We found this out the hard way.

Because the screws were going to be inside the little plastic brackets we used a flashlight.

Putting the desk together required different positiions - If you have a bad back you might want some help putting it together.

The shelving is pretty generous and it does seem steady. I'm afraid to move it because we don't want to strain any part of the particle board.
So when we set it up we pretty much have it where we want it for awhile.

It's disappointing to know that it's not all metal and that the "wood" is particle board, there's not any real "solid" wood....

Honestly I feel like this is a mediocre product and it's misrepresented.

If I had to shop for another desk I will go to a local office supply and actually look and feel for what I'm looking for in a desk.

I won't be buying anything else from Ameriwood...

4...but niceApr 20, 2008
This desk took me 2 1/2 days to put together, just because the holes that the silver screws went in were to small. So it took force which made the time add up. I got so frustrated with the silver screws and began to substitute them with the shorter black screws because the fit perfectly...Overall, looks and feel sturdy...Hopefully they all aren't made like mine.

3Can't Recommend ThisJun 14, 2007
As another reviewer already pointed out, the desk isn't metal. Only the legs are metal. The desktop and shelves are all made of wood, seems to be some kind of particleboard at that. All of the brackets that connect the wooden desktop and shelves to the metal legs are made of PLASTIC, except for 3 metal brackets that hold the main desktop to the metal legs. Even the slide-out keyboard shelf attachments are primarily made of plastic. The slide mechanism itself is metal but it connects to the metal legs by a plastic bracket that the metal slide is encased in.

I assembled the desk and bookshelf by myself. It took about 3 hours, and the only tools required are a #2 Phillips screwdriver and a hammer - you only need to use the hammer once, to push in a couple dowels. The included instructions are fair, I suppose, as far as instructions go. There is a toll-free phone number you can supposedly call for help, which I never tried.

Some of the screws under the desks/shelves are rather hard to reach to screw in properly. On one of the wooden shelves for the bookshelf, there was a gouge in the paint and wood that looked like it was covered over with a black marker, and there were other places on the shelves that looked like they used a black marker to cover paint or wood defects. When you try to push the shelves into place between the metal legs, the paint from the shelves sometimes rubs off onto the metal. After I fully assembled the desk, the first time I tried to move it, the CPU shelf broke off - the wood where the screws were connected into the shelf chipped off. So if you attach the CPU shelf be very careful when trying to move it.

Anyone who has heavy computer equipment should probably avoid this. I have a 17" iMac and a self-built PC in an Antec P180 case, with 2 LCDs ( a 22" Viewsonic and 20" Apple Cinema Display) mounted on 2 Ergotron LX VESA mounts. Thus far the desk seems pretty stable (except for the broken CPU shelf I mentioned), but the plastic brackets and cheap wood are highly worrisome. It also worried me when I tried to move the desk into place.

So overall, if you have light equipment and don't plan to move the desk much, it may be an acceptable option for the price. But I'd find it very hard to recommend this desk to anyone, especially if you have a lot of heavy equipment. I suppose you get what you pay for - a good, solid desk is expensive.

2Not "Metal"May 24, 2007
I ordered this desk. It is wood and not "metal" as advertised. Only the leg supports are metal. It is of average quality. If you want a real metal desk........this one isn't it. A major disappointment.

4Love itApr 23, 2007
I bought this desk a while ago and I love it!! It was very easy to put together, easy instructions. The only thing I have to complain about is that the wood screws only come in one size so when you are trying to put the keyboard holder on, it goes thru the wood so be careful when you put this piece together.
